Dismay Over Board's Library Decision (Reprinted at the request of the Author)
Dear Supervisor Mazzuca:
I am writing to express my dismay over the Philipstown Town Board's decision to ignore the passage of Proposition 414 in the November 7, 2006 election. As elected officials, you and the council members do have "an obligation to the people of the town." The people of the town voted to approve secure funding for the Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library. They did not vote to have their taxes misspent in a legal wrangle over a binding vote. Whether or not you like the outcome, the vote must stand.
As a professional writer, I depend on the services of the Butterfield Library. I have been a regular patron for more than twelve years, and I happily worked there part-time as a staff librarian for nearly five years. I have witnessed firsthand the economic, cultural, and intellectual impact that the Butterfield Library has on our community. The library serves our elderly, our parents, our children, our students, our teachers, our unemployed, our employees, our business owners, our tourists, our potential residents, our new residents, our lifelong residents, our renters, our summer residents, our homeowners. Many of these are the very people who elected you to carry out their wishes. I urge you to honor the November 7 vote.
