South African Boys' Choir Captivates Putnam Valley Students
On Thursday, March 29th, the celebrated Drakensberg Boys' Choir from South Africa performed two high-energy assemblies for students from Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) and Putnam Valley Middle School (PVMS). The choir's enthusiastic and skillful performance included music, drumming, and dancing to traditional African tunes as well as more familiar music such as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and The Star Spangled Banner.
From the moment the Choir took the stage wearing their white and red "gum boots" reminiscent of South African mine workers, the student audience members were captivated.
PVHS Choral Director Gerard Micera first learned about the choir through the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) whose annual conference he attends each year. When Mr. Micera heard that there was an opportunity to host the choir in Putnam Valley, he contacted the Putnam Valley Music Association (PVMA) president, Beth Schmidt. She, along with Putnam Valley High School theater manager Susi Cummings, made arrangements to host the choir and their members at the Clear Lake Boy Scout Camp. This opportunity was made possible through the courtesy of Steve Hammonds and the Westchester Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The Putnam Valley PTA and PTSA joined the PVMA in helping to sponsor meals for the Choir.
