Talented Moms Bring Women's History Month to Life for Haldane Second Graders
Ms. Doyle's second grade class at Haldane Elementary School celebrated Women's History Month by inviting all mothers into the classroom to share their occupations. The students were lucky enough to learn from five different women.
Mrs. Eng-Wong, a therapist, shared a book about feelings and helped the children categorize them into pleasant, unpleasant or neutral emotions. Mrs. LaRocco, a writer, discussed the different genres of writing. The children then learned about character and setting while focusing on Charlotte's Web. Under her direction, they created a comedy play based upon their research animals. Mrs. Traina is a holistic nurse. She shared some tools with us, including a stethoscope. The children also learned massage and breathing techniques, as well as yoga poses.
Mrs. Palmer-Lane, a costume designer for BBC in England, shared photographs, fabrics and patterns from some of her television creations. Lastly, Mrs. Allison, a landscape designer for residents of New York City, gave each child a plant. She shared amazing photographs of some of her botanical creations from atop the buildings of NYC.
Each mother presented many interesting facts and details about their role and responsibilities in the community. The children were fascinated by the diverse roles and responsibilities of women in our very own community.
