Young Garrison Scientists Announce New Research at Science Fair by Linda Tafapolsky
One student explored the physics of a trebuchet, a medieval military device similar to a catapult. Another student researched the effectiveness of ecologically sound packing materials. These were some of the experiments conducted by students from grades K through 8 for the annual Garrison School Science Fair. More than 160 projects were displayed and judged at the school gym during the week of March 19th- 22nd, 2007.
The projects, created over a three-month period by the young scientists, were divided into five categories: physics, biology, earth science, technology/ engineering, and chemistry. Within these categories, a wide array of creative scientific exploration was evident. Students examined the functioning of a calorimeter, built complex mechanisms for testing the effectiveness of drum and disc brakes, and evaluated which substances melted ice most effectively.
Every year, members of the community with scientific backgrounds volunteer to mentor Middle School students and serve as judges for the fair. The judges/mentors for this year's Science Fair included: Joanna Batstone, Thad Cook, Karen Drotar, David Drotar, Tim Downey, Russell Dushin, Susan Filardo, Linda Lomonaco, Ed McGowan, Chip Marks, Ted Miller, Krista Osborn, Pete Salmansohn, Frank Suits, and Joe Waldron.
The Science Fair is jointly organized by Mr. Keegan and the Garrison PTA, with efforts this year being chaired by Linda Tafapolsky and Sheryl Kiser Ferguson. The Science Fair sponsor for 2006 was B&L Deli, which provided food for the judges.
The winning students may enter their projects in the Tri- County Science Fair, to be held this April. In the elementary Elemenary (K-4) Division, the youngsters recommended to advance to Tri-County Science Fair were Spencer Rundquist, Serena Wessely, and Poppy London. In the Middle School Division (Grades 5-8), winners included: Teddy Christenson, Lukas Lahey, Scott Jacoby, Drew Ford, and Ryder Hine, all of whom placed first in their subjects, and are permitted to advance to the Tri-County Science Fair.
Additional winners included Bryant Dain, Dylan Culp, Elizabeth Lansbury, Nicole Pidala, Ali Galezo, Christiana Stebe- Glorius, Ander Stebe-Glorius, Emma Jacoby, Niklas Clemente, Graydon Cook, Rosemarie Mackey, and Tess Hansler. Receiving Honorable Mention were Sasha Kleszy, Tim Suits, Kate Lahey, and Amanda Rodak.
