P.L.A.Y. Lacrosse Honors Bob Freeman by T. Donovan
With Renaissance-man Joe Ceglia providing inspiration for the spring season and Judy Colamarino and her friends providing the dinner, the Philipstown Lacrosse Association for Youth (P.L.A.Y.) honored Bob Freeman with its Highlander Award for service to local youth.
Following tradition, a highlight of the evening is the raffle of new equipment and apparel. This year 10 new lacrosse sticks, both boys and girls, were raffled off to awaiting players. The equipment was donated by Dain's Lumber, Seekircher Steelcase Windows, Charlie's Delicatessen/ Judy Colamarino, Thad Cook, Matt and Lydia McMahon, Garrison Woods and Yorktown's Sports Barn.
New business included the announcement that all engineering work managed by Michael Bean to build a rebounding wall has been approved by the Garrison School Board. PLAY members are grateful for the board's support. Our youngsters and community members will benefit from the leadership and generous gift of Eric and Paticia Hine for years to come. The work will begin ASAP.
Other new business announcements included PLAY's two new non-travel, "in-house" Lacrosse programs. One is a Highlander All-Girl Lacrosse program on Sunday afternoons beginning in the last week of April for five weeks. The other is an "in-house" program for Highlander 1st and 2nd grade boys. Both of these programs will be headed by PLAY parent/ coaches with the accompanying standards. PLAY is not affiliated with the Recreation Dept. To learn how to sign up, search on HighlanderLacrosse.com.
Currently PLAY is directly responsible for roughly 80 local high school students playing lacrosse year-round at two public high schools and at a handful of private high schools. Without the parental boosters at these schools, the young people PLAY has encouraged might not benefit from this fun, healthy, competitive and invigorating game.
