Land Trust Publishes Dark-Sky Resource Guide
Since the beginning of the year, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust has been working with residents, lighting experts, local contractors, and municipal officials to provide solutions for reducing light pollution in the Highlands. Recently as part of its Light Pollution Reduction Campaign, the Land Trust began widespread distribution of its newly-published Dark-Sky Resource Guide. Developed by Land Trust board member Laura Hromadka and Director of Outreach and Development MJ Martin as a resource book for smart lighting to reduce costs and save energy, over 200 of the free guides have been provided to local architects, builders and electrical contractors, as well as the building departments of local municipalities.
"What a terrific, simple resource to turn to for those of us working in the building community," local architect Roger Hoffmann observed upon receiving his Resource Guides. "And homeowners can easily use it when looking for good lighting solutions to have a local electrician install. Being better neighbors and saving energy
costs- this guide 'lights' the way," Hoffmann concluded, with a smile.
In addition to providing basic information on lighting problems facing residents and businesses, highlighting the high cost of energy waste, and offering simple solutions for reducing light pollution in general, the Guide provides four pages of lighting fixtures and accessories that will easily and inexpensively reduce light trespass, glare, and sky glow. Additionally, it offers extensive lists of product suppliers and other resources for anyone wanting to find a lighting solution. The Guide is also available at no charge to anyone contacting the Land Trust, or by visiting their website at www.hhlt.org.
As MJ Martin noted, "This is a needed resource in our communities- information on sound lighting alternatives, from a variety of sources, all in one place. Coupled with the free flood light shields we've handed out and information about lighting solutions provided through the PCNR and other channels, we hope area residents realize this is an easy way to save money, improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods, and allow us to see the stars again."
Free copies of the Dark-Sky Resource Guide and pairs of free flood light shields can be obtained by visiting the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, calling them at 424-3358, or e-mailing info@hhlt.org.
The Hudson Highlands Land Trust seeks to protect the special character of the Highlands through land conservation, advocacy, and the promotion of sound long-term planning. HHLT works with landowners and groups of neighbors who are interested in preserving their property for future generations; provides information about our area's wonderful natural resources; draws attention to the high costs of shortsighted development; and organizes community events such as the 3rd Annual Family Festival Barbeque & Square Dance on June 30th, and the Going Local Sustainability Expo held each Fall.
