Hudson Highlands Land Trust Announces 2007 Takea Hike Schedule

Bill Schuster, Executive Director at Black Rock Forest, helps hikers identify native grasses.
Looking for some outdoor, family friendly fun or are you an experienced hiker looking for a challenge? The Hudson Highlands Land Trust sponsored Take a Hike! program has something for everyone. This year's schedule features old favorites, new kid-friendly treks, informative rambles and exhilarating adventures. All hikes are led by local volunteers and free of charge.

The Land Trust kicks off the program on Earth Day with a tour of "green" buildings at Black Rock Forest in Cornwall. This impressive facility features sustainable building materials, a geothermal heating system, solar panels, etc. The tour is followed by a hike in the Forest where Con Ed proposed building a hydro electrical plant, now the home of several environmental research projects.

In May, the Land Trust will celebrate the Songbirds Of Spring with an easy hike in Fahnestock State Park and will host a tour of Constitution Island on May 19th. In the month of June, Eric Lind, Director at the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center will lead a Birdwalk To The Boardwalk, little ones will love the Musical Tot Trek, a whimsical walk led by singer/songwriter Stacy Labriola. Those who are looking for a challenge can join Hank Osborn up, around, and down Osborn Loop.

Hikes are scheduled through October and include a ramble through Forts And Bridges in Fort Montgomery, Viewpoints And Vistas led by artist Don Nice, Jonathan Kruk's Spooky Storytelling Hike and a Columbus Day Nature Adventure For Kids.

All hikes are free of charge. For more information or to receive a free trail map, you can call the Land Trust office at 424-3358, send email to
