Bear Mountain Park and Bridge Call for Action - Reduce Carbon Emissions
To the Editor:

This Saturday, April 14, all are invited to send a call out to our elected officials for action on the global climate crisis. We will gather at Bear Mountain State Park at 10am, then walk as a group to stand on the Bear Mountain Bridge walkway.

Residents of Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Westchester Counties have come together to plan this event for everyone in our community. It is part of a nationwide campaign comprised of approximately 1300 actions in all 50 states being held on April 14 as part of "Step It Up 2007" a National Day of Climate Action.

We are meeting at Bear Mountain State Park (near the Inn - $6 parking fee) at 10am to hear music by Chris Ruhe and Rafael Figueroa of Beacon, followed by Cold Spring's own Foundry All-Stars. Bright green "Step it up" T-shirts will be available on a first come first served basis.

At 11am we will gather for a group photograph - displaying our banners with the slogan "Step It Up, Congress! Cut Carbon by 80% by 2050." We will hear from local elected officials from the surrounding area, including Westchester County Executive Spano, as well as Lisa Rainwater of Riverkeeper. Congressman John Hall will conclude this first part of the event with his comments.

At approximately 11:30, we will start the 15 minute walk from the Park to the Bear Mountain Bridge - walking through the wonderful Bear Mountain Zoo - and enter the Bridge walkway - standing with our signs and banners, proclaiming our concern to Congress and raising awareness in the community about this genuine problem - and challenge - that is facing us. We will be serenaded as we walk onto the Bridge by singers and environmentalists Shirl Lawrence and Steve Kaplan, from Yorktown Heights.
