Garrison Kids Enjoy Participating in Destination ImagiNation

"On Saturday March 24th, young minds from the Garrison School were soaring at the Destination ImagiNation Regional Tournament held in Yorktown. Two teams proudly represented their school at the event with creative solutions to their "challenges" which they developed over the course of five months. Destination ImagiNation, Inc. is a worldwide program that builds creativity, problem solving and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways. It inspires participants to learn the process, art, and skill associated with problem solving. This is the Garrison School's second year of participation in the program.

First-time DI participants in the second and third grade came together as the Garrison Blue Bull Dogs. Their theatre-in theround team challenge, Round About Courage, required them to create and perform a skit in which the main character had to overcome a personal challenge in a heroic adventure. Managed by Beth and Tim Greco, team members were Marina Martin, Caitlin McCullough, Colin Waldron, Finn Waldron, Addie Westerhuis, and Jason Zielinski. The Greco's were thrilled with the team's commitment and how well they did in the Instant Challenge portion of the tournament, and commented, "The kids loved practicing Instant Challenges, they really showed how well they worked as a team under tight time constraints. We're so proud of them all!"

Dancing and singing their way, "fishco style", through their crime-solving skit in the "CSI-DI" team challenge was the fourth grade team, "The DI Aztecs". The fourth graders were up against 18 other elementary teams and were inched out of a place at the State Tournament by only 3 points! Managed by Linda Hoffmann and Linda Tafapolsky, team members were: Micah Adams, Peter Close, Catherine Drotar, Peter Hoffmann, Sara Jacoby, and John Swartzwelder. The Managers continue to remark on how well these kids worked together, always with a genuine respect for each other and the process. Months of brainstorming, gadget design, scenery and costume making, and of course dancing, went into their performance. Watch out John Travolta!

The team members and managers would like to thank their volunteer Regional Tournament appraisers Linda Sweeney and MJ Martin, as well as Principal Stephanie Impellittiere for arranging the dress rehearsal in front of the entire school before the big day. Garrison School sends its congratulations to the Haldane DI teams for their own terrific showing in the competition - best of luck at States.
