Putnam Valley Men Arrested for Burglary of a Lake Peekskill Home

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith announces the arrest of two Lake Peekskill residents on charges stemming from an early morning residential burglary.

According to Sheriff Smith, at about 7:25am on April 5, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department received a call from a Mathes Street resident reporting that she saw two men enter a neighbor's home and remove a safe from within.

Sheriff's deputies and investigators responded to investigate the incident. Responding officers conducted interviews and were able to ascertain a description of the intruders and the vehicle they used. Sheriff's officers, assisted by troopers from the Cortlandt barracks, scoured the area in search of the suspects and their car. Approximately one hour later, Captain Thomas Lindert and deputies Andrew Kristan and Thomas Lee observed the suspect's vehicle being driven in the vicinity of Avon and Becker Streets in Lake Peekskill. The car was stopped and the two male occupants were taken into custody.

Robert Thompson, 28 years old, of 21 Becker Street, Lake Peekskill and 39 year-old John Brennen of 12 Memosa Street, Lake Peekskill, were arrested and charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, a class "C" felony. They were arraigned before Carmel Town Justice Thomas Jacobellis, sitting on behalf of the Putnam Valley Justice Court. Mr. Thompson was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail or $100,000 secured bond. Mr. Brennen was also sent to jail. He is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail or $60,000 secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in Putnam Valley Justice Court on April 12, 2007 at 9:30am.

Sheriff Smith praised the members of his department and the cooperation of the state police. He also cited the actions of alert area residents whose information aided police in the apprehending of those suspected in committing this crime. "This is another classic example of citizens acting as the eyes and ears of law enforcement. Residents looking out for their neighbors' homes provided police with vital information which enabled us to quickly put closure to this case," he said.

Burglary in the Second Degree is a class "C" felony, a conviction of which may result in prison term not to exceed 15 years in a state correctional facility and a $5000 fine.
