Authors and Illustrators Week is Coming to Haldane April 23-27
Next week Haldane elementary school students have a unique opportunity to meet an award-winning group of writers and illustrators representing a wide variety of genres, as part of Haldane PTA's Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Writers and Illustrators Week.
PARP is a national PTAsponsored program to encourage reading among elementary children. Writers and Illustrators Week was created to offer Haldane K-5 students first-hand experience with these professionals.
Two authors kick off the week on Monday, April 23. Awardwinning poet Jo Pitkin will offer a poetry workshop to 4th graders. Pitkin's poems have been published in Dark Horse, Lyra, Ironwood, Quarterly West, Nimrod, and other magazines. The 5th grade class will enjoy a visit from New York Times environmental columnist and author Andy Revkin. Revkin will discuss environmental activism through journalism. His most recent book is The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World. Revkin has also authored books on the Amazon and Global Warming.
On Wednesday, April 25, science-fiction author Luisa Perkins will visit the 2nd graders to discuss the genre of science fiction. Perkins is the author of Shannon's Mirror. Also on Wednesday, Chris Duffy, a cartoonist and editor of the comics section at Nickelodeon Magazine will share his work with the 3rd grade and involve them in a hands-on cartooning project.
Author and illustrator James Yang comes to the 1st grade class on Thursday, April 26. Yang is the author and illustrator of Joey and Jet and Joey and Jet in Space and the illustrator of Build it Up and Knock it Down by Tom Hunter. Yang's prize-winning work has appeared in many magazines, including Graphis, Newsweek, Forbes, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated, as well as in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He is also the designer of Clockman, a sculpture on display at the National Museum of American History.
On Friday April 27, kindergarten students will receive a special visit from Jean Marzollo. Marzollo is the award-winning author of over 100 books, including the bestselling I Spy books and the Shanna Show books. Recent books she has both written and illustrated are: Pandora's Box; Let's Go, Pegasus!; Little Bear, You're A Star; Daniel in the Lions' Den; Miriam and Her Brother Moses; David and Goliath; and Ten Little Eggs.
