Common Threads Presenting "Eco" Workshops on April 28 at Garrison School

Come see, come learn, come play! Witness the arrival of spring, learn what it takes to be green and make some crafts at Common Threads' annual Family workshops (noon - 4pm) on Saturday, April 28 at Garrison School. Featuring an "eco" theme and celebrating Arbor Day, the day is sure to be fun for everyone. Each participant will take home a white pine sapling, along with assorted arts and crafts of their own making and design.

Some new events are planned this year along with some perennial favorites. Haldane's Mr. Wick will bring his reptiles to the workshops for the first time. His current and former fourthgrade students know all about these creepy, crawly critters from around the world. Tales of the San Bushmen from Botswana will be brought to life by the Durkin family, including African inspired beading by 11-year old Macallan Durkin. Craft activities include designing a terrarium, working on a community mural, making felt balls and flowers, and using recycled materials to make new art. You'll also find information about how to make your life "greener", with help from Garrison's Eco Kids and Haldane's Earth 911, including a demonstration on how to help the earth through composting. . If you find yourself having too much fun, your family can unwind in a yoga workshop.

Transformation Painting takes the stage at 3pm. Watch Chris D'Agostino captivate the audience with story telling and face painting in a moving tribute to the earth. A crowd-pleasing favorite at Common Threads Community Night in 2005, Chris is back to deliver an encore performance.

Admission is $10 for your first child and $5 for each additional child (up to $20 per family). Parents or caregivers must remain on site. Light lunch and snacks will be available for purchase. Brownies can earn a badge for their participation and a limited number of brownie troops, or birthday parties, can be accommodated with advance registration. Bring your own wide mouth jar to make the terrarium and your own bag to carry home your goodies. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

Common Threads is a joint project of the Garrison and Haldane PTA and winner of the 2006 Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award of Excellence from the National PTA. It receives support from both schools, and from the Garrison Children's Education Fund and the Haldane School Foundation.
