Putnam Valley Arts Presents "Open Mike Night" at Lake Peekskill Community Center by Edward Paul Greiff
Of all the events Putnam Valley Arts puts on "Open Mike Night" is the most fun says Bob Cinque, guitarist, singer, and PV Arts member. This year's "Open Mike Night" is being held at the Lake Peekskill Community Center on Saturday, April 28, 2007 starting at 6pm when performers are encouraged to show up and sign in. It's a first-come-first-performance gig. The fun kicks off at 7pm.
Refreshments will be available with the proceeds going to the Lake Peekskill Youth Committee headed up by Jeanne Gallinger.
Open Mike Night is open to the public ages 8 to 80, everyone is invited, all you need is a willingness to try. Performers won't be disappointed, the applause and support will be there because the audience is always made up of people like yourself who like to sing in the shower and don't mind sharing their talent with others.
"We've cast a wide net this year over Putnam, Westchester, and Dutchess counties," says Bob Cinque in trying to encourage performers to appear. The schedule, always subject to change, includes Jazz, Folk, and Rock singers and musicians. The Ninham Mountain singers, a one-act play, poetry reading and a special treat by published author Carolyn Doggett Smith are on tap.
Ms. Smith will read from excerpts from her new book The House of Faun. The novel is set in the period when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. Some Pompeians survived and this novel describes the lives and loves of those people during the years leading up to the eruption, and what happened to them during that catastrophic event. It's an absorbing and passionate story.
Carolyn Doggett Smith spent her childhood in Rome and Athens and majored in classical civilization in college and graduate school. A freelance editor and writer, she is the author of The Absentee American, Strangers at Home, and Freelancing. Smith lives with her husband in Putnam Valley.
What makes "Open Mike Night" successful is its warm friendly atmosphere where no one feels intimidated and everyone is encouraged "to give it a go," as one participant expressed.
The concept of having an open mike night started in Peekskill in 1973 and it was known as "The Night Kitchen" a place where you could have coffee, snacks, and display your talents. That warm and friendly atmosphere still prevails today. Putnam Valley Arts held their first "Open Mike Night" in 2004 as a tribute to the Night Kitchen. For some reason they skipped 2006 but they're coming back stronger than ever. Come and enjoy you wont be disappointed says Bob Cinque.
