Michael Junjulas Announces Candidacy for Haldane Board of Education Seat

"Michael is a 1987 graduate of Haldane High School and has lived in Cold Spring for most of his life. He currently resides in the village with his wife Patricia and three children Patrick (11), Stephen (9) and Matthew (20 Mos).

"Michael served as a Trustee for the Board of Education in the Haldane Central School District from 2003 - 2006. During that time frame he served as Board Vice President and sat on the Code of Conduct, Health and Safety, and the Religious Expression Committees. In May 2006 he was re-elected to a consecutive threeyear term to end in June 2009. At the reorganization meeting in July 2006 he was elected Board President.

"However, in January 2007 he regretfully had to resign his position due to major surgery that he required in early February. Michael made this decision knowing that his recovery period from this surgery would take a few months, and that the District was in the process of searching for a new Superintendent of Schools to replace the retiring Dr. John DiNatale in June 2007. He also knew he would not be able to perform his duties as trustee and the single most important task a school board member can do is hire a school Superintendent. Michael was recently assured by his surgeon that he has fully recovered from his surgery.

"The two main reasons I have decided to run for an open seat are:

"To ensure the smooth transition of the current Superintendent of Schools to newly appointed Dr. Mark Villanti who will be assuming this position in July 2007. Dr. Villanti comes to Haldane as a highly qualified Superintendent, but it is imperative to have someone with experience at Haldane to help answer questions on our current school policies, structure and programs to say the least.

"Currently the Haldane School Board consists of, President Merandy (5 years experience), VP Curto (3 years experience), Trustee Marino (3 years experience), Trustee Campbell (1 year experience), and Trustee Gallagher (3 months experience). It should be noted that VP Curto and Trustee Marino will not be seeking another term. Trustee Gallagher, who was appointed to fill my vacancy this past February and myself, will be running for one of the three open positions this election. The other two candidates seeking to be elected have no previous experience on the Haldane School Board of Education. Therefore, with the loss of Trustees Curto and Marino, the board will suffer immensely from this loss of experience, especially since the district will be starting next year with a new superintendent. If elected, I will bring to the Haldane School Board the necessary experience needed, having previously served for 3 years 7 months, before voluntarily resigning for medical reasons."

"The second reason is the escalating problem of high school taxes and the importance of preparing budgets that are fiscally responsible. Approximately 80 percent of the revenue Haldane receives is from the taxpayer. The Board of Education is accountable for preparing a budget that considers the concerns of the taxpayer while balancing the importance of a quality education, with the limited funds received. Last year, President Curto and I offered a new approach for the district in preparing budgets, this proved to be very effective. If elected I will ensure this process is continued and expanded upon, as it was demonstrated to save money within the district.

"I have the experience and leadership that the district needs. Please come out and vote May 15."
