Makaria Gallagher to Run for Seat on Haldane Board of Education
"Cold Spring is my place of birth and I attended Haldane, K through 12, graduating with the class of 1977. While I attended Haldane, my mother, Paula Gallagher, was a junior high and high school math teacher at Haldane. I left Cold Spring to attend college and law school, later returning to start a family.
"My daughter, a high school senior participating in the Dutchess Community College Bridge Program, and my son, a high school freshman, both have attended Haldane since kindergarten. My daughter will be attending Brandeis University in the Fall. Currently I have a niece and two nephews in Haldane Elementary, and another nephew in High School.
"As an Assistant District Attorney of Putnam County, I have also had the opportunity to speak to students in Social Studies and Health classes at our high school on a variety of topics from domestic violence to criminal law. I have been fortunate to have viewed Haldane from many perspectives: as student, parent and aunt, as the child of a teacher, and as a guest speaker in the classroom.
"For over 22 years I have worked as an Assistant District Attorney, and currently supervise the domestic violence, child abuse and sex offense case load. As an Assistant D.A., I realize the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork necessary particularly to effectively handle cases involving child victims. My varied perspective, my interest in children, and my preference for a collaborative work style has been an asset to me in my role as a school board member.
"I was fortunate to be appointed by the School Board to serve as Trustee at a crucial time. We are fortunate to have had so many outstanding candidates to consider in our search for Superintendent. The School Board worked to achieve a unanimous decision in the selection of Mark Villanti as our next Superintendent.
"As Trustee I am committed to supporting our incoming Superintendent in efforts to continue the enhancement of our educational program. It is essential that we build an climate of trust between the Haldane School Administration, the School Board and the Community at large. I am fully committed to quality public education for all students, regardless of ability. As a homeowner and taxpayer myself, I also fully appreciate the community's need to avoid adding to the tax burden. We must search for ways to continue to improve our program without adding to our costs.
"I hope to continue to serve this community as Trustee on the Haldane School Board."
