Lions Shred 2,600 Pounds of Cold Spring Residents' Personal Documents
The Cold Spring Lions Club this week announced they shredded 2,600 pounds of personal documents belonging to Cold Spring residents as part of their Second Annual Shred- It Day to Prevent Identity Theft awareness campaign. The event took place last Saturday at the parking lot of The Nest Childhood Learning Center on Route 9D.
One resident brought paperwork dating back to the late 1800s, from his family's 100- year-plus business. Also, several seniors brought documents to be shredded in quantities from a single bag to several boxloads. According to national statistics by the Federal Trade Commission, seniors are most often the targets of con artists, who use personal information gathered through "dumpster diving" to conduct personal identity theft scams.
"The Lions Club is extremely pleased with the turnout this year," said Lions Vice President Fred Clarke. "We have obviously struck a chord in the community and we are happy to provide a much-needed service to residents and local businesses."
Long-time Lions Member Nick Walsh of Mobile Shredding Corporation of Croton-on- Hudson donated the mobile shredder that was used to shred thousands of documents that residents brought in cars and pickup trucks. Mobile Shredding Corporation employees T.J. McKenzie and Randy Heath also donated their time on Saturday to support the Lions Club at this event.
The Lions plan to hold another Shred-It Day event next year. "We will probably have the Third Annual Shred it Day sometime shortly after tax-season, and right before the start of the Farmer's Market," said Clarke.
