NHFD Firefighters Receive Basic Training By Hans Moeller, North Highland Fire Department
The North Highlands Fire Department has been blessed with many new members over the years. All new firefighter candidates must take the Putnam County Basic Firefighter #1 course as soon as available after membership is granted.
At present, this involves 87 hours of training, covering 20 sessions. This means eleven Sunday and nine Friday sessions. Many involve training at the Fire Training Center in Carmel.
At this time, six people have been undergoing training: Carolyn Alves, Ray Kannenberg, Michael Lyons, Lauren Merritt, Michael Savastano and Robyn Spinelli.
What does it take to become a firefighter? It starts out as a desire to serve the community; a willingness to complete a long, demanding educational program, lasting about four months. At the same time they are expected to participate in company drills, which take place twice per month. It is only the beginning! Additional training is on-going.
Lastly, they obligate themselves to respond at all hours, day or night.
They deserve our applause and the community's support!
