How to remove information before you recycle a computer (for your personal privacy)
(1) Open the computer case. Remove the hard drive and then destroy the drive. Do NOT use a hammer, instead use a flat head screw driver to break the circuit board on the bottom of the drive - be careful that a piece of it does not fly into anyone's face or eyes. (2) For environmental purposes...While the case is open, remove the battery (it's a round coin/quarter size battery) and dispose of it at a battery recycling center or at the Putnam County Household Hazardous Waste Day on May 19. The battery is on the system board and is easily removed.
To transport the items safely: 1. Keep all products in original containers 2. Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in a second container 3. Secure items to prevent spillage or breakage in your vehicle 4. Keep chemicals separated 5. Do not keep items in a hot, unventilated vehicle for an extended time period 6. Do not smoke near chemical products.
Products that will not be accepted are latex paints, ammunition and explosives, dioxins, tires, medications and infectious waste, radioactive waste, construction and demolition waste, commercial establishment waste, propane tanks, unlabeled or unidentifiable items.
