False Alarms, Small Fires bring out Emergency Personnel on Quiet Week by Maria Theodore Leiter
While the local volunteer emergency organizations stand ready to assist in times of trouble, they happily reported a "slow" period this past week.
On April 21, 2007 the North Highlands Fire Department was dispatched to the Stone Crop Gardens off Route 301 for a commercial fire alarm. Second Assistant Chief Pat Scherer determined upon arrival that there was no problem at the location. It is not known what set off the alarm.
Later that same day, the NHFD reported to a two-car accident on Route 301 West of Canopus Lake. Three occupants of the vehicles refused medical attention.
Another alarm brought the department to 53 Armando Road, off Lane Gate on April 25. That alarm was accidentally tripped by workers at the residence.
A report of a structure fire at 119 Rockwald Road brought out the NHFD again on April 28. Scherer advised that the fire was extinguished by the homeowner before firefighters arrived. The blaze was caused by a short in the oven's heating element.
The Continental Village Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a brush fire on Stubin Road on April 23. On April 24, they responded to Buchanan for a Mutual Aid call, where they put out another brush fire. They also were called to Winston Lane on April 27 for an accidental automatic alarm.
On April 28, they responded to two personal injury accidents at Bear Mountain Bridge Road.
Chief Louie Luongo of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department reported that his department responded to two unfounded calls on April 22; a brush fire at Canopus Hollow Road and a report of smoke at 2122 Oregon Corners.
On April 23, they were called to 2035 Orchard Road, where a street light caught fire. The fire burnt out and the department called New York State Electric and Gas to the scene.
A medical emergency on the Taconic State Parkway, south of Pudding Street required the PVVFD assistance. Firefighters assisted with traffic control, while the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps. aided the occupant of a vehicle who needed medical assistance.
On April 26, the PVFD was called to Aqua Lane for an automatic alarm that was accidentally set by workers, and later to 2108 Wood Street for a deck fire. The fire had been extinguished before they arrived.
The week closed with two accidents on April 27. No injuries were involved in either. One took place on Peekskill Hollow Road, the other on Mill Street.
The Cold Spring and Garrison Volunteer Fire Departments did not report any calls for the week.
