St. Mary's to Mark Memorial Day with Garden of Remembrance

"In Flanders fields, the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row..." An enduring Memorial Day tradition inspired by this popular World War I poem will again be rekindled in the heart of Cold Spring. The third year of a Garden of Remembrance on the Great Lawn of St Mary's Episcopal Church, at the corner of Chestnut and Main Streets, will offer the community the opportunity to memorialize deceased veterans throughout Memorial Day week.

Sponsored by St. Mary's Episcopal Church, with support from the Philipstown Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion, Dain's Lumber, and C & E Paint, the Garden of Remembrance will display wooden crosses and stars of David decorated with poppies and memorialized to those who risked their lives for our freedom - a custom first begun by Westminster Abbey, London, England.

If you would like to include your loved ones in the Garden of Remembrance, visit one of several local venues from May 5 - 24, write your dedication on a blank cross or Star of David with the marker provided, and make a $5 donation per dedication.

Participating local businesses and organizations are: C&E Paint Supplies, Charlie's Deli, Foodtown, Pete's Deli, and St Mary-in-the-Highlands Church.

The Garden of Remembrance will be on the Great Lawn at St. Mary's from Friday, May 25th. All are welcome to visit and pay tribute.

"The Garden of Remembrance is our way of showing appreciation," says Father Shane Scott-Hamblen, St. Mary's Rector, "whilst we honor those who risked their lives for our country. They will be remembered."
