Kent Visual Artists to Inaugurate Ground Floor Space of Former Firehouse on Route 52

The Visual Artists Committee of Arts on the Lake, Kent, NY, is preparing an exhibit of paintings, sculpture, photos, stained glass and mixed media for a Sunday afternoon opening on May 20 in the restored ground floor space of the former Lake Carmel Firehouse on Route 52 in Lake Carmel.

The Lake Carmel Park District working under the auspices of the Kent Town Board arranged for the lower floor of the old firehouse to be restored so that it is now a white-walled gallery space that can also be used for lectures, readings and small performances.

Chris Casaburi, a professional photographer and Chairman of the Visual Arts Committee, contacted twenty-eight artists who will be exhibiting over seventy-five works in this inaugural event.

Painter George Corbellini, sculptor Michael Keropian, painter Bill Ullman and artist Roy Volpe are involved with the design and installation of the exhibit which will be open weekends from 1 to 5 pm for two weeks.

President of Arts on the Lakes and photographer Bob Rogers has been working to secure funding for a hanging system that will facilitate the display of the diverse works.

Arts on the Lakes, the umbrella organization for the Visual Artists Committee, was incorporated as a non-profit last year to foster the arts in the Town of Kent. While the Town was working with the Putnam County Department of Corrections to repair the former Firehouse, Arts on the Lake presented several performances in homes and more recently at the Kent Cliffs Firehouse.

Upon the invitation of the Lake Carmel Park District, Arts on the Lake will now be the major tenant of the former Firehouse, creating the Lake Carmel Community Arts Center. Co-Directors of the Center, James Shearwood and Ellen Leerburger, are expected to announce a program of summer classes and performances at the time of the exhibit opening.

The jazz duo, The Other People, are expected to play during the exhibit opening, Sunday, May 20, from 1 to 5pm. The following Memorial Day Weekend, the exhibit will be open from 1-5pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; and again on June 2 from 1-5pm.

Admission is free; donations appreciated.
