Nelsonville Fish & Fur Kids' Fishing Day a Success Kids' fishing day was great family fun by Maria Theodore Leiter There's nothing better than to while away a warm day watching the fishing line dance on the water
Many Cold Spring and Nelsonville residents enjoyed a lovely trout dinner on Sunday, courtesy of their children. The fish were reeled in at the 19th Annual Anthony Savastano Memorial Fishing Derby sponsored by the Nelsonville Fish and Fur Club.
"This is for the kids," said Bruce Cane Garson of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. He said the DEC was there to lend their support to the event that serves to introduce children to outdoor sports. Sportsmen are often among the staunchest defenders of the environment in our area.
"We get more and more women in our training," said Garson, who is an outdoor sports instructor. "It's because of broken households. Mothers are looking for ways to bond with their kids."
"We do it for the kids of the area," agreed Bill Kimmel, a club member. "We are trying to teach the kids to get away from the computers and the T.V. and get outdoors.
More than eighty-four children signed up on Sunday, beginning at 8am. The Cold Spring reservoir was stocked with 300 trout, courtesy of the club and local town and villages. Parents were not allowed to fish; although they helped their children cast their lines. The beautiful weather made for a wonderful day.
Sara Chirico, 11, and her friend Kelsey Flaherty, 12, said they had a lot of fun and were anxiously awaiting the results of the upcoming contest. Sara was very pleased with her 14½ inch catch, which was, as of 11am, in the running to win.
"They're only young once," said Cheryl Chirico, who, with her husband and like many others, got out of bed early on a Sunday morning to watch their children enjoy the rewards of a good day's fishing.
The other first place contender was 3 year old Desire Hyatt, granddaughter of Mike Savastano, the President of the Nelsonville Fish & Fur Club. Savastano said he keeps the event going every year in honor of his late father, Anthony, who began it 19 years ago.
Besides the fish, the club also provided free food and refreshments, and raffled off dozens of kid-sized fishing poles. The Nelsonville Fish and Fur Club was organized in 1895 by hunters, fisherman and trappers who lived in Nelsonville.
