Flowers, Fires and Fun at Stony Kill Farm
April showers sure brought May flowers to Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center. Come visit them for their outdoor programs in May. There's something for everyone!
See spring in all its glory on Saturday, May 12 at 9am. Join a Stony Kill naturalist for a closer look at the profusion of wildflowers that grace their trails. Learn how to identify them and why they are important to wildlife and to humans. Currently in bloom are Dutchman's breeches, twinflower, trout lily and others just poking their heads out from the chilly ground. Also on Saturday, May 12 from 9am until noon the Verplanck Garden Club is hosting their annual pre- Mothers Day Plant Sale. Join them at the farmstead to *pick* out a beautiful treat for mom. Perennials, annuals, herbs, shrubs, flowering plants, house plants, planters and gardening advice are available. Come early for the best selection.
Did you ever wonder how people started fires before matches and lighters? Come find out how at a campfire program at Stony Kill on Saturday, May 19 at 7pm. We'll discuss and demonstrate firebuilding techniques used by Native Americans. Afterwards, join Stony Kill's naturalists in singing songs and performing skits. Using voices, hands, and a guitar, they'll see how much fun they we can have around the fire they we laugh, sing, and learn about the natural world. Saturday, May 26 at 2:00 PM - Fire, fire in the Woods! Join them out on the trail to explore how fires, like the one here at Stony Kill last spring, help shape our woodlands, both destroying and creating habitat for wildlife.
Pre-registration required only when noted. Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center is operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and is located on Route 9D in Wappingers Falls. Exti 11 off of I-84. Two miles north of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. The seven miles of trails and grounds are open to the public from sunrise to sunset for hiking and nature enjoyment. Office hours are weekdays, 8:45am to 4:30pm and Saturdays, 9:30am to 4:30pm and Sundays from 1-4pm.
