Pattern Hosting 'Housing the Hudson Valley' Conference

Pattern for Progress will host on June 12 "Housing the Hudson Valley," a conference designed to help Hudson Valley decision makers understand the housing crisis challenging the region and how best to address it.

"We are bringing together many of the brightest and most experienced housing minds in the Hudson Valley to help shed light upon this vexing issue," said Pattern for Progress President Jonathan Drapkin. "Whether you call it affordable housing or workforce housing or something else, many leaders peg this issue as the one that most limits our region's potential for growth, stretching family budgets to the breaking point and driving our elderly and grown children away from the Valley."

The daylong conference, which will be held at Ulster Community College's Stone Ridge Campus, will feature Federal Home Loan Bank of New York President Al Dellibovi as keynote speaker. Since 1992, Dellibovi has overseen operations for the $80 billion wholesale bank serving thrifts, savings banks, commercial banks, and credit unions. Previously, Mr. Dellibovi served as the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1989 until 1992.

Additional participants will include area representatives from the many groups currently addressing the issue such as government, banking, housing development, business, and notfor profit sectors. Conference attendees will be introduced to speakers who will "put a human face to the problem" in the Hudson Valley, said Drapkin, adding that the conference will also feature break-out sessions highlighting best practices and lessons learned from some of the region's most articulate spokespeople on the subject.

"This conference will build upon the many local efforts already underway to address this issue, drawing upon Pattern's resources to frame the problem from a regional perspective and seek collaborative regional solutions," Mr. Drapkin said.

Current sponsors include: TD Banknorth, Westchester Medical Center, the Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), Jacobowitz & Gubits Law Firm, Ulster Savings Bank and Key Bank.

Pattern for Progress is a regional research, policy, planning and advocacy organization that strives to preserve and enhance the quality of life in New York's Hudson River Valley. The group serves the nine counties of Greene, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester.
