Michelle Stoisits of Putnam Valley High School Awarded NY State Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) is pleased to announce that graduating senior Michelle Stoisits has been awarded a New York State Lottery Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Scholarship for 2007. Michelle is the daughter of Carol and Joe Stoisits, of Putnam Valley.
The Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship is awarded to one exceptional senior from every participating high school in New York State. Each winner receives a $4,000 scholarship, paid annually in $1,000 increments to be applied toward the cost of attendance at an accredited New York State college, university, or trade school. This scholarship award is intended for students who are involved in many areas of high school life including citizenship, community service participation, leadership skills and academics.
In addition to having a stellar academic record and a National Merit Letter of Commendation to her credit, Michelle has participated in a wide variety of extracurricular and athletic activities. An accomplished athlete and musician, she was also a 2007 winner of the Putnam County Youth Award, honored for her work with Blythedale Children's Hospital, the Make a Difference Club, Stage Crew, Special Olympics, SADD, and her work as a soccer trainer and referee.
PVHS math teacher and coach, Jerri Cohen, knows Michelle well. "Michelle is an outstanding student and an All- Section soccer player," Mrs. Cohen said. "She was captain of the Varsity Soccer team for the past two seasons and was a very capable leader on the field and off. Her understanding of the game and patience with her teammates made the team a more cohesive unit."
Mrs. Cohen continued, "To Michelle, giving back to her community through her many talents is exceptionally important to her. As an outstanding student, Michelle has been a compassionate peer tutor for classmates who had difficulty understanding complex concepts. Her math tutoring through Mu Alpha Theta, the Mathematics Honor Society, is something she takes great pride in. Volunteering at the annual Dustin Strumke Memorial Soccer Tournament, when she was not on the field participating, has been vitally important to her. Michelle also worked at the Special Olympics trials held each April at the PVHS. She worked many hours at Blythedale and has been a part of practically every function for the Make a Difference Club."
