"Evening Star Party" Returns to Leonard Wagner Park
The Putnam Valley Parks and Recreation Department's Sunset Series have announced that - weather permitting - they plan to hold another free "Evening Star Party" on Saturday evening, May 19.
According to Joe Rao - who writes a nationally syndicated on-line astronomy column for SPACE.com and is an Associate at New York's Hayden Planetarium - "On that evening, a beautiful "celestial tableau" will be available in the western sky soon after sundown: the two brightest objects in the night sky, a slender crescent Moon and the brilliant planet Venus, will be side-by-side. No doubt many will be looking skyward that night and wondering what is that bright object next to the Moon."
"The Moon itself will almost appear three-dimensional . . . its dark side will be glowing dimly with a bluish-gray light . . . known as the "Old Moon in the New Moon's arms." " This effect is caused by reflected sunlight striking Earth and being directed up toward the Moon. The light that is bounced off our oceans and clouds is what will cause the dark part of the Moon to glow so eerily"
Theodora Moeller, Sunset Series Director says: We are very fortunate to have Joe Rao graciously off these Evening Star Parities" "We are inviting the general public to come to this free event at Leonard Wagner Memorial Town Park at 8:30pm." If you have binoculars or a telescope you may want to bring them plus a lawn chair.
Telephone reservation will be accepted at 526-3292 or you can sign up in the contact us section of www.PVSunset.com
