Haldane School Board Holds Election-Night Workshop Director of Instructional Services, Dr. Lordi, resigns position by Mike Turton
While voters decided the fate of its 2007/08 budget, and as four hopeful candidates waited to see who would be elected as trustees, the Haldane Board of Education held a workshop on Tuesday, May 15th.
When the dust had settled and election results were tallied later that evening, voters had approved all three budget propositions. The main budget of $18,630, 241 will represent a 3.99% tax increase. Funding was also approved for new vehicles and for purchasing the existing modular classrooms. Makaria Gallagher was elected to a three-year term and led all candidates with 808 votes. Michael Junjulas was also elected to a three-year term while Evan Schwarz was elected for two years. Robin Flanagan's bid for election was not successful.
Trustees approved a number of action items in what was a light workshop agenda. The Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Diane Lordi, Director of Instructional Services, effective June 30, 2007. Elementary school principal Maggie Davis and Andy Irvin, principal of the middle school and high school, were appointed to serve as 504 Coordinators for the remainder of the 2006/07 school year. No reason was given for Dr. Lordi's resignation.
The resignation of Greg Garner as long-term special education substitute teacher was also accepted, effective May 15. Ms. Kelly Kilpert and Ms. Skye Hoff will fill the position through June 2007, both on a part-time basis. Mrs. Patricia Fitzgerald was hired as a long-term teaching assistant, replacing Mrs. Celia Thomas, whose request for a leave-of-absence was granted.
Village of Cold Spring Trustee John Teagle was in attendance and introduced himself to the Board. Teagle has been appointed as liaison between the Village Board of Trustees and the Haldane School Board.
Trustees informally reviewed a number of pending items that will be dealt with in the weeks ahead. Discussions will be held with the Village of Cold Spring to clarify fees levied by the Village for the use of Mayor's Park. Storm water management will also be discussed, including questions raised by Cold Spring Mayor Anthony Phillips regarding the possible impact downstream of storm waters flowing from school property. The Haldane Central School District must comply with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations that govern storm water management but is exempt from Village regulations.
The committee examining options for replacing the elementary school heating system met recently with the Fuller D'Angelo architectural firm to gather additional information. The committee, which is grappling to determine the relative effectiveness and full cost of ownership of steam, hot water and geo-thermal heating systems, will update the Board at its June meeting.
The Board will meet next on Tuesday, June 5 at 7 pm.
