Dr. Marc Space Appointed Superintendent of Putnam Valley School District
Educator leaves Taos, N.M. after five years as Superintendent
by Margaret Sternberg

The Putnam Valley School District's search for a new superintendent has ended with the appointment of Dr. Marc Space to head the district starting July 1, 2007. Dr. Space will join the district after having served as superintendent for the Taos, N.M. Municipal Schools for the past five years. Prior to that he served for five years as Associate Superintendent of the Alamogordo Public Schools.

Dr. Space, who was reached via phone during the May 17, 2007 meeting of the Putnam Valley Board of Education, introduced himself to those assembled and spoke for a few minutes, displaying a wry, understated sense of humor and saying that, in accepting the position, it was the first time he was not replacing someone who was "leaving under dubious circumstances" and that this was the first time he would have to "live up to somebody who's been held in high esteem," referring to outgoing Superintendent Gary Tutty, who is retiring.

Continuing, Space said that he hoped that the faith shown in him by those who selected him "will be realized. I intend to make every effort…" Space also said the return to New York was a "homecoming of sorts," having previously worked in the state.

Dr. Space is expected to visit the district during early June and to "transition out" to this area during July.

Board of Education President Tina Mackay attributed what she described as "the rich pool of candidates" who applied for the position to the leadership Superintendent Tutty has provided during the last four years and the achievements of the district during his tenure, saying that Tutty had helped to "seal your own fate."

In the only other presentation of the meeting, Chorus Teacher Gerry Micera and students Kelly McAuliffe and Jackson Gilman- Forlini described the recent high school mixed-choir trip to Boston. The students expressed their gratitude for the trip, saying that they had had experiences they could not have had in a classroom. They also spoke about bonding as a group and that the trip had allowed some students, who otherwise do not get a chance to do any travel, an opportunity to do so.

Katie Mahoney, a Junior at the high school, received board recognition as the recipient of a Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute scholarship, which compensates the student $15,000 per year for four years. Students must be nominated by both the Math and Science Departments for the scholarship.

The Board also passed a number of resolutions, one of which approved the budget vote and the re-election of school board trustees, Mary Maus and Frank Reale. Several of the remaining resolutions dealt with temporary teaching position replacements, and several housekeeping actions were taken.

The next meeting of the Putnam Valley Board of Education will be Thursday, June 14, at 7 pm, during which retiring teachers will be honored and teachers who will be getting tenure will be announced. The meeting will be held in the high school's Performing Arts Center.
