Village Survey Deadline Extended to May 29 Haldane statistics students assisting
Haldane statistics students are getting some real-world experience working on the Cold Spring residents' survey, a project of the Comprehensive Plan Special Board.
With several batches of returned surveys already available, statistics teacher Todd Mensch says the students are making good progress on data-entry, allowing them to handle an additional week of responses. Accordingly, the deadline for village residents to return their surveys has been extended to Tuesday, May 29.
Earlier, the students provided suggestions for the design of the survey itself. Now, they're deep in the midst of keying-in information from the surveys, using a specialized computer program for statistical analysis. Their final task will be assisting with the tabulation process.
In addition to becoming more familiar with data-entry, the survey has allowed the class to learn more about the statistician's relationship with a client and about protecting the integrity of data through controls. Marshall Mermell, a Special Board member whose marketing business often involves use of statistics, is helping Mr. Mensch guide the student efforts.
Giving residents a chance to help shape the future, the survey will be a valuable source of local opinion as the Comprehensive Plan develops. It seeks views on a wide range of issues - scenic views and sidewalks, village character and uses of the waterfront, parking and playgrounds, health care and businesses, and residents' thoughts on what they like in the village, what they would change, and what they want preserved for future generations.
Special Board Chair Carol Casparian says that while the number of responses to date has been promising, "many more are needed. The more people respond, the more valuable the result."
Anyone lacking a survey to fill out can pick one up at the Village Office, 85 Main Street, or Butterfield Library on Morris Avenue.
