Brush Fire on Fishkill Road Beat Back by NHFD by Maria Theodore Leiter
A brush fire on Fishkill Road on May 4, 2007 was quickly brought under control by firefighters according to Deputy Chief John Noschese of the North Highlands Fire department. It took place just south of the fire department and had already involved 50 to 60 yards of the woods along the road by the time firefighters reached the scene.
The fire, which was believed to be caused by a tossed cigarette, was knocked back within fifteen minutes using water lines feeding off of trucks. Both the NHFD and the Cold Spring Fire Department were involved in putting out the blaze. According to Noschese, it took firefighters just one hour to put it completely out.
On May 16, a resident of 111 Jaycox Road remembered having left his dinner on the stove upon returning and seeing fire trucks heading in the direction of his home. By the time he and the firefighters opened the door, the first floor of his home was filled with smoke. Luckily, there was no fire. NHFD firefighters removed the burnt food and set up smoke removal equipment. The Garrison and Cold Spring fire departments were on standby during the incident.
A similar incident also took place on May 5. In that case, a smoke detector was set off at 4 Circle Drive by burning food. NHFD responded to the mutual aid call and was back in service in less than five minutes. They also responded to two fire alarms and one carbon monoxide alarms in the past two weeks, none of which resulted in any incidents. A smoke investigation on Esselbourne Road on May 1 also turned out to be unfounded.
Chief Louie Luongo of the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department reported that his company responded to a garage fire on Lake Drive on May 8. Firefighters put out the blaze and there was minimal damage to the garage.
On May 10 the PVVFD responded to a call about an accident involving a tractor trailer on the Taconic State Parkway. The big rig hit the Route 301 overpass, but was gone by the time the department arrived at the scene. A second accident occurred on May 11 north of Route 6. The two vehicle occupants refused medical attention. Another vehicle accident took place in the afternoon of May 17 on Oscawana Lake Road. One person was transported to the hospital by the Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The PVVFD responded to Cedar Drive on May 14, where they put out a small brush fire. They also responded to three false alarms in the past two weeks. An alarm at Peekskill Hollow Road on May 15, was thought to have been maliciously set. On May 16, firefighters assisted the PVVAC with a patient lift.
The Cold Spring, Garrison and Continental Village fire departments did not report their activity for the past two weeks. Firefighters wish to remind residents that incidents of brush fires increase as the weather gets hotter. Drivers should refrain from throwing lit cigarettes from their windows.
