Putnam County Joint Veterans Council to Hold Three-Day Memorial Weekend Watchfire Vigil
The Putnam County Joint Veterans Council will be holding a three day event this Memorial Day weekend. It will be the "Putnam County Veterans Watchfire Vigil" and will be held on three consecutive evenings: May 25, 26 and 27 from 6pm to 8am. There will be various ceremonies and events being held throughout the evening to which they invite the public to attend.
One of the main events will be the retirement of tattered American Flags. The organizers are urging anyone who wants to be part of this event to try to attend some time during the three days. Organizations are welcomed to contact the Council and host a block of time.
The story of watchfires is varied in American history. Washington used watchfires to signal the end of the Revolution. They also refer to the fires that were maintained at Union campsites during the Civil War. Julia Ward Howe mentioned them in the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" in the second stanza. "I have seen Him in the watchfires /Of a hundred circling camps." Recently VVA Chapter 333 in Rockland County has held Watchfires on Memorial Day along the Hudson River.
This Watchfire Vigil, a new tradition in the County, will be held at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park. A Watchfire will be set facing the Veteran Memorial and in front of the site where their Goldstar Mothers Monument will stand. The veterans of Putnam County will guard these special sites with the watchfires of the glorious American tradition.
