Annual Historical Dinner at Mount Gulian Features President Abraham Lincoln

Mount Gulian Historic Site in Fishkill will hold its 12th Annual Historical Dinner on Saturday, June 16. The evening features dinner and conversation with President Abraham Lincoln as portrayed by Christian Johnson of the American Historical Theatre. A fourcourse meal adapted from Lincoln's Second Inaugural Ball will be served by candlelight in the museum's 18thcentury Dutch barn, providing the perfect historic setting for the occasion.

Mr. Johnson gives special insight into our country's great emancipator. His numerous appearances, including the White House and the National Archives, have made him one of the premier presenters of the Civil War President. While Lincoln the President struggled with the wrenching experiences of a country divided, Lincoln the family man dealt with an irrational wife and deaths of dearly loved sons. Through it all, Mr. Lincoln was known to be a clever, even funny man who, when faced with a question he did not wish to answer, was often known to reply, "That reminds me of a story…"

Elaine Hayes, Executive Director, says, "While Mount Gulian is often thought of in terms of the American Revolution because it served as General Von Steuben's headquarters, it does have a connection to the Civil War through Robert Newlin Verplanck. Robert was an officer of African American troops who fought in Mr. Lincoln's army. This year's dinner will celebrate the accomplishments and the notable issues that were resolved during his time as our 16th President. "

As United States President, Abraham Lincoln never let the world forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue than freeing the slaves in the Confederacy. This he stated most movingly at the Gettysburg military cemetery: "…we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
