Memories of the First Memorial Day in Europe from Former Philipstown Resident by Jack Dietrich
After the war in Europe in 1945, the first Memorial Day service in Europe was observed. Here is a photo at Maastracht of the Netherlands where General Eisenhower, with the Ambassador, laid a wreath at the cross where American POWs were captured and shot during the war.
I was very fortunate enough to be part of this ceremony, being assigned to the 107th AGF Band. Being assigned to perform there we were also assigned to perform for President Truman when he arrived in Brussels. We practiced for a week on the tarmac at the airport and when President Truman did arrive he sent an aide over to the bandmaster and requested no fanfare. So be it, it was still a great honor to be part of the first Memorial Day in Europe.
