Presentations Lead Garrison School Board's Agenda
School Board supports requirements changes in Federal and State testing
by Margaret Sternberg

As the 2006-7 school year winds down, the May 23, 2007 meeting of the Garrison Board of Education appeared to mirror that, with presentations being made, test scores being received, and the eighth grade trip having taken place and being discussed.

In one of two presentations that evening, Jean Saunders History Contest winners Gavin Brower and André Adams were on hand to show the School Board their PowerPoint presentation on Mystery Point that had won an award. In recognition of their achievement, Principal Stephanie Impellittiere awarded both Certificates of Achievement.

In the other presentation, English teacher Ian Berger displayed the blogs his students had written as a result of their reading. Each blog involved a group of five or six students who "became" one of the characters in the book they had read and then wrote in the blog about various feelings and aspects of his or her "character." The blogs can be accessed through the school's website.

In the more prosaic part of the meeting, the school board approved supporting a position paper on testing and assessment from the Westchester - Putnam School Boards Association that recommended changes be made to the requirements stipulated in the federal No Child Left Behind Act and in NYS testing. There had been several discussions by the board in past meetings concerning increasing discontent on local, state and the national level about the testing, culminating in board support of the position paper.

Superintendent Colucci announced that the ELA results had been received by the school and will be presented to the board once analyzed. The raw results are posted on the State Education website.

President Anita Prentice reported on the School Forest Committee, saying that Eagle Scout John J. Dean had proposed building a Revolutionary War soldier's hut on the South Redoubt as part of his Eagle Scout requirements. The Board later approved that his project move forward. Prentice also reported that the Committee had discussed getting additional signage that would go into greater depth about the historical importance of the Forest.

Additional items approved by the board that night included accepting of the election results, and awarding the bid for the window replacement, which will complete much of that work for the school. The winning bidder was Wager Contracting Co., with a $92,200 bid. Wager was one of three bidders, with the highest bid for the work approximately $145,000. Tenure for Speech and Language teacher Jeanne Khuns was approved.

Superintendent Colucci congratulated and thanked grades K-3 on their concert Feelin' Good, which supported the school's "wellness" theme for the year, and she reported that the eighth grade trip to Boston had been a resounding success. A highlight of the trip had been a tour guide's compliment to the class on having set a new standard of achievement, having answered correctly all of the questions asked by the guide during the class' amphibious tour of the city.

The next meeting of the Garrison Board of Education will be Wednesday, June 6, at 7pm.
