Putnam Valley Pauses to Remember Its Fallen Heroes by Edward Paul Greiff At the Memorial Day 2007 ceremony the wreath for VFW Post 391 is presented by veterans from past wars: (l-r) Ed Forret, Vietnam; Alton Ligone, WWII; and Sam Oliverio, Vietnam.
Putnam Valley Town Supervisor Sam Davis opened the May 28, 2007 Memorial Day ceremony held at the John Layman Veteran's Memorial Park with a story about why we wear a red poppy on this day to remember our fallen heroes. In attendance were the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownie Scouts, PVV Ambulance Corps, PVV Fire Department, VFW Color Guard, veterans from past wars, invited guests and the guest of honor, Major Timothy Brown, who just returned from Iraq. But most amazing of all was the crowd of people in attendance who, along with those participating in the ceremony, took the time to attend this one-hour tribute to our veterans who lost their lives.
They do it every year and it's a tribute to the character of the Town of Putnam Valley.
The opening speaker was VFW Post 391 Commander Robert Ulrich, a veteran of the Vietnam War who is also the Putnam County VFW Commander.
Once a year we gather to remember our war dead and all the deceased veterans on Memorial Day and then we celebrate the holiday with a barbeque. For some families it is more painful because one of their members died in combat and they must live with this memory everyday. So besides remembering our war dead we should remember those families who have lost a loved one in any of the wars. "After today's ceremony we will visit each of the cemeteries, present our Color Guard, and play taps in remembrance," said Commander Ulrich.
