Nighttime Illumination at Bannerman's Island
The Irvington Education Foundation and the Irvington High School Tech Theater Program, working with Deke Hazirjian, the Bannerman Castle Trust and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, announce the filmed illumination of Bannerman's Island Arsenal.
On Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9, Bannerman's Castle will be illuminated for the public, featuring performances in dance, music, theater and art created on the island by the Middle School students. The 2007 Bannerman Illumination, which received its major funding from the Irvington Education Foundation, is designed and directed by students from Irvington High School.
This project was inspired by an illumination designed and created by Deke Hazirjian and his company, New York City Lites, in 1998. Irvington Art Department Chair and Tech Theater Director, Thom Johnson, photographed this event. Irvington lighting students Adam Farber and Matt Marks saw these photographs and were inspired to recreate the project. With the suggestion of Mr. Hazirjian, live performances of theater, dance and music will be filmed in high definition video for documentary puposes.
The Bannerman Island Illumination will show how students with help and support of their school and community groups, such as the Bannerman Castle Trust, local Boat Clubs and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, can create a real world artistic experience.
The Bannerman Island Illumination is presented under special arrangement from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. This project will help raise awareness and funds to match a grant for $350,000 from The New York State Environmental Protection Fund to stabilize the Bannerman Family residence on the island. The project will include masonry, a new roof and floor system, as well as new windows and doors.
There will be limited access for an audience on the island as well as a tour boat that will be anchored near the island. To answer questions, please contact Thom Johnson at Thomas.johnson@irvingtonschools.org. To make reservations call The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. at 845-234-3204.
