Laborers Recruit Apprentices
The Laborers International Union of North America, Local 1000, will conduct recruitment from May 21 through November 19 for three skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.
Applications will be available at the local, 514 Haight Ave., Poughkeepsie, from 1pm to 3pm, every working Monday during the recruitment period.
The union requires that applicants:
-Be at least 18 years old.
-Have a high or general equivalency diploma.
-Have transportation to work sites and apprentice classes.
-Sign a statement declaring they are physically able to do the work and take a physical examination (required by federal regulations for hazardous waste and asbestos removal) at the union's expense.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
