Wet Weather Didn't Dampen Hikers' Enthusiasm at Museum of the Hudson Highlands' Hike-A-Thon Photo by George Potanovic, Jr.
Clouds and a steady rain didn't deter Museum of the Hudson Highlands' supporters. More than 100 registered hikers - many accompanied by children and other family members - turned out recently for the Museum's first ever Hike- A-Thon. This unique fundraising event brought in more than $30,000 to help support the Museum's many environmental education programs.
Museum Chairman, David Redden welcomed hikers. He thanked participants for braving the cold, wet weather to support the Museum. "We are fortunate to have such a wonderful museum in our community," said Redden. "Through our many programs - from toddler through school age and adult - we are working to create responsible caretakers of our environment." He thanked the participants and recognized the sponsors for their support.
Together, we are able to share the Museum's mission of caring for the world in which we live," Redden continued. Nearly a dozen local businesses and organizations supported the Museum's Hike-A-Thon. Walden Savings Bank was the event's lead sponsor.
Before starting out, hikers warmed up with a lively exercise routine provided by Sportsplex of New Windsor. They then chose from a variety of trails for their outdoor adventure. The Museum's Kenridge Farm location, which hosted the Hike-A-Thon, has a network of well-marked and maintained trails through woods, fields, and wetlands. Trail difficulty ranges from easy to moderately challenging - there's even a trail suitable for baby strollers.
In spite of the wet weather, participants enjoyed beautiful hikes, nature encounters- including a glimpse of tadpoles, goslings, and a giant centipede - and a morning spent outdoors. Many hikers finished up with a warm drink and a visit to the Museum's annual Wildflower sale.
