Baseless Attacks
To the Editor:

Karl Rove and the National Republican Party are up to their old tricks again. I should say "old trick", since it's basically the same one trick they have used over and over again, the same one-trick-playbook that failed Rove in 2006: twisting the facts in a nasty way. We're more than a year away from the 2008 Congressional election, but the GOP is already launching robo-calls in Westchester County to slam John Hall. And they're claiming the Congressman is making you pay more in taxes.

Well, Karl, let's look at the facts. The fact is that Congressman Hall voted for a budget resolution that provides for tax cuts for middle class families through Alternative Minimum Tax relief and creates a budget surplus in the years ahead. Now, we know how much Karl Rove and President Bush hate tax cuts for the middle class, but the fact is, that's one of the many things the budget resolution does. Congressman Hall also cosponsored the Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2007, to cut taxes for small businesses. That's right: cut.

Of course, Karl and his robot callers don't want to talk about Iraq, or about the shameful record they have on veteran affairs. But the fact is that as chairman of the House Veterans' Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, our Congressman has passed the Wounded Warrior Act, to make sure our vets receive top quality medical care.

The Congressman also introduced the Pay Veterans First Act, which will freeze fiscal year 2007 bonuses for senior level Veterans Affairs Department officials unless the VA has reduced its backlog of benefit cases to fewer than 100,000 claims. Under Republican power, the backlog has grown to over 600,000 claims, while the top brass has continued to get bonuses. But Karl's robots don't want to talk about that, either.

They also don't want to tell you about how Congressman Hall has fought for flood relief for New Yorkers, has secured $400,000 in funding for a senior center in Kent (funding that Sue Kelly said she's provide, and didn't), got a $1.4 million DOT grant for Stewart Airport, and has fought tirelessly to ensure verifiable safety - or shutdown - at Indian Point.

If you look at the facts - or just look around our district - you can see how hard our new Congressman is working for all members of NY's 19th. Even the ones who may not like him. Because that's his job. Karl Rove's job is to twist facts and sling mud. And I think we're all getting tired of Karl Rove doing his job.
