Thomas Fleming, president of the Society of American Historians and author of Washington's Secret War, The Duel: Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and the Future of America and many other acclaimed books of American history, will speak about Alexander Hamilton at the Desmond-Fish Library in Garrison at 2pm on June 16. Hamilton led a remarkable life, rising from a deeply troubled childhood to become probably the most influential American not to have been elected president. He had close ties to the Hudson Valley, including eating breakfast with Benedict Arnold in Garrison on the day when Arnold's treachery was discovered. The Desmond-Fish Library is located at the intersection of Routes 403 and 9D in Garrison.

On display in the library is a traveling exhibition, Alexander Hamilton:The Man Who Made Modern America, developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in collaboration with the New-York Historical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The exhibit includes life-sized statues of Hamilton and Burr at the time of their famous duel.

Mandeville House, which was frequented by Hamilton and other members of Washington's staff during the Revolution, will be open for tours from 12 to 5 on June 16 and 17. (Please sign up in advance at the library.) June 23 will be a double header, with Philipstown's own Jonathan Kruk and Richard Bala presenting Alexander Hamilton in Story and Song at 2 and Robert Hutchinson talking about Hamilton in the Highlands at 4.

These programs are made possible, in part, by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Progra m. In Putnam County the Decentralization Program is administered by the Putnam Arts Council. For more information, please call the library at 424-3020 or check their website, .
