Letterboxing at Howland Library
Beacon…In conjunction with the Summer Reading Program "Get a Clue @ Your Library!", Howland Public Library in Beacon will present "Get a Clue…and Go Letterboxing" on Thursday, June 28th from 1- 2:30pm. This program is geared for children and adults together because letterboxing is a great family activity.
Letterboxing is a mix of treasure hunting, art, navigation, and exploring interesting, scenic, and sometimes remote places. The basic idea is that someone hides a waterproof box somewhere (in a beautiful, interesting, or remote location) containing at least a logbook and a carved rubber stamp. The hider then usually writes directions, known as "clues" to the box. Once the clues are written, hunters in possession of the clues attempt to find the box.
Several Mid-Hudson Libraries, including Howland Public Library, have decided to hide their own letterboxes within their buildings so that adults and children can go letterboxing indoors. Go to http:// letterboxing.org or www.atlasquest.com and key in "Howland Public Library" to find the "clues" to lead you to the library's letterbox.
Letterboxing has become very popular in the Hudson Valley and there are even a few letterboxes hidden on Mount Beacon. During the "Get a Clue…and Go Letterboxing" program, families will find out just how letterboxing works, how to make a letterbox, and where to go letterboxing in the Hudson Valley (and beyond). Children will make a fun-foam stamp to take home.
Please register for this fun program by calling Ginny Figlia, Youth Services Librarian, at 845-831-1134, ex.103 or on the online calendar at http://beaconlibrary.org.
