Haldane School Delayed by "Senior Prank" Students involved face charges of trespassing
The Village of Cold Spring Police report the investigation of a vandalism incident that occurred at the Haldane Central School District on Friday June 8, 2007 which caused a 2-hour delay in the opening of school.
According to the Police, during the early morning hours of Friday, June 8, 2007, human figure chalk outlines were found by a jogger at various locations on the school property. Several of these "crime scene" figures were also splashed with a red "blood-like" liquid and contained "smiley faces." CSPD officers secured the scene and conducted an investigation with the assistance of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
The outlines were subsequently removed by the janitorial staff before the start of the regular school day. No physical damage was done to the facility.
As of 12 noon on June 8, three Haldane Students were identified as participants and were subsequently charged by the Police with trespassing, a violation, and issued appearance tickets. The student's names are being withheld pending eligibility for youthful offender status.
In a letter that was sent home to parents of Haldane Students on Friday, Haldane Superintendent Dr. Di Natale wrote, "These acts of vandalism are taken very seriously by us. Mr. Irvin [Haldane High School Principal] and I, with the assistance of the Cold Spring Police and the District Attorney's Office, were able to determine the students involved." He also wrote that the administration will be pressing charges and will enforce the school code of conduct.
Police reported that after speaking with the students, in the presence of their parents, the students admitted to doing the drawings and they had only intended their actions to be a "senior prank." No harm or threat was intended by the drawings and all three agreed it was a "stupid idea" and expressed their apologies to the school community.
The investigation was a joint effort of the Village of Cold Spring Police, Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Haldane Central School District and the Putnam County District Attorney's Office.
