Volunteers Clean up Gipsy Trail Road
On June 8, George Whipple III brought 8 of his employees to cleanup roadside litter along Gipsy Trail Road in the Putnam County Town of Kent. Just before they arrived to do the cleanup, 4 empty water bottles had been hidden along the rural road...each with a $1 bill screwed into the top. During their walk, they partially filled 6 large orange bags....and found the money!
The cleanup covered the one mile distance from Route 301 to the Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park.
Each volunteer received a 32" litter-grabber sponsored by either Putnam Federal Credit Union or Hannaford Supermarket, a safety vest and a large orange bag. Additional orange bags were in a back-pack carried by one of the volunteers. Pictured is the team ready to begin its walk.
After the successful litter cleanup, the volunteers planted 12 trees and bushes along a hillside at the park. The plantings were supplied by George Whipple III.
Gipsy Trail is one of 54 roads, bike paths and highways in Putnam County that have been adopted by area businesses, civic groups and individuals. The Adopt-a-Highway program is free. The only requirement is to do at least 4 cleanups a year.
This and other programs aimed at reducing roadside litter are part of the work organized by Keep Putnam Beautiful. Information on how readers can experience the personal rewards of volunteerism is available at www.putnamcountyny.com/ kpb, or by phone at 845-528- 1632
