Cold Spring Fire Company Pipe and Band to Host First "Celtic Ceilidh" This Saturday Traditional music and dancing at Mayor's Park; proceeds to benefit the Fire Company
This Saturday, June 16, the Cold Spring Fire Company Pipe Band will host Cold Spring's first "Celtic Ceilidh" at Mayor's Park. True to the Ceilidh tradition, it will be a community event with live traditional music and dancing for everyone to join in. James and Susan Ferguson of the Scottish Country Dance Society of New York will lead the dancing and provide instruction. Music will be provided by local musicians Scott Mettey and Joe Murphy, with guest appearances from Seth Gallagher and others. There will also be special performances by the Pipe Band and local Irish dancer Clare Shanahan.
If you've never been to a Ceilidh, you may have a few questions, so here's the Pipe Band's Ceilidh FAQ:
What is Scottish Country Dancing? Scottish Country Dancing is traditional social dancing that dates back hundreds of years. It's typically done with groups and follows repeated formations, a bit like square dancing, so it's easy to learn. It's also fun.
Do I have to bring a partner? No! Most of the dances are done in groups of six or eight, and there will be plenty of people to join in with.
Can kids participate? Yes! The dances are quite easy, so no one should have any difficulty keeping up. And if you do, no-one minds!
Do I have to wear a kilt? No! But there will be lots of people wearing kilts, so if you have one, wear it!
The Ceilidh will take place at the Mayor's Park Pavilion on Fair Street in Cold Spring. Food will be available, with the Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary grilling hamburgers and hot dogs. Beer and soft drinks will also be available.
The event will run from 5- 9pm. Admission at the gate is $10 for adults and kids under 16 are free. Bring a blanket or chairs. Please note that all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds are to benefit the Cold Spring Fire Company.
