American Cancer Society 2007 Relay for Life of Putnam County

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life 2007, swept across Putnam County. The cancer survivors, caregivers, family and friends who participated in this year's Relay For Life at the Mahopac High School on June 2 and 3 were joined by hundreds of thousands across the country. Throughout the United States, Relay For Life participants joined together with one goal in mind-to put an end to cancer. Approximately 2,500 people participated in the Mahopac Relay For Life this year. During its first eight years in Mahopac the event raised 1.8 million and has projected to raise more than $300,000 this year for the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education, advocacy and patient services. The 200 survivors proudly kicked-off the Relay by walking the Survivor Recognition Lap reminding us all that they are the reason we continue the fight. Their courage gives us hope that cancer can be beaten and reminds us all of how important early detection truly is.

From the Survivor's lap to the Luminary Ceremony, the feeling at the Relay was bittersweet. Hope and prayers were expressed for the survivors while tears of sadness were shed for those who lost the battle.

Despite the heat and later in the day the violent lightning storm people turned out in record numbers to raise money to fight this terrible disease. Lorraine Calebrese co-chairperson said, "We will lick this disease by working together and we will find a cure."

Willa Wright, Executive Director said she would personally like to thank all the participants, volunteers and sponsors for the enthusiasm they show to support the American Cancer Society's mission. The looks on the faces of the participants, volunteers, survivors and loved ones say it all - Relay For Life is a magical moment in time. It is an event that no one involved with can ever forget.

Remember it's not too early to become involved in Relay For Life for next year. To find out how, contact your local American Cancer Society at 1- 800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
