Galef Is Smart, Energetic
To the Editor:

Mr. William Gouldman, in his letter last week, characterizes Sandy Galef, our representative to the NY Assembly, as being "out of ideas." He reached this conclusion, he says, after reading an article in the North County News which, he states, shows that Galef "does not know where she stands" on property taxes while Assemblyman Greg Ball, a 29-year old freshman from Carmel, has proposed "meaningful, serious property tax reform." This depiction of Galef does not square with my experience.

I have met the Assemblywoman as she has campaigned person-to-person in front of Foodtown in Cold Spring and on one other occasion when she met with a group of us from Philipstown to hear our concerns about electronic touch screen voting machines. On that occasion, Galef gave serious, thoughtful and intelligent attention to our views and followed up afterwards keeping us informed about her work on this issue.

I found a copy of the North County News article that Mr. Gouldman apparently read. That article does not demonstrate, at least not to me, that Galef is "out of ideas" or that she "does not know where she stands." What it demonstrates is that Galef disagrees with freshman Assemblyman Ball's approach to the property tax problem and that she believes his bill fails to address various important problems that it would in fact create. She characterizes Ball's proposal as too black and white given all the complexities involved. She then indicates that she is considering an entirely different approach on her own.

None of this comes across to me as someone who does not know where she stands. What comes across to me is that Gouldman likes the Ball bill, or maybe he just likes Greg Ball. Also, maybe Gouldman just doesn't like Sandy Galef. He has previously written letters criticizing her for being one of the 75% majority in the State legislature to vote for Thomas DiNapoli to replace Alan Hevesi as comptroller [PCNR: 02-21-07] and for not bringing enough "pork" back to our district [PCNR: 05-02-07]. What next?
