Haldane High Schoolers Visit Constitution Marsh to Study Contaimination and Cleanup
On June 1, 2007 14 students from Mr. Cairl's Advanced Placement U.S. & Politics class, Mr. Patinella's AP Biology class and Mr. Mensch's AP Stats class took canoes through the Constitution Island Marsh sanctuary. The trip was part of a project funded by the Haldane School Foundation.
Initially, the students were given background information in the classroom on the Superfund Program. This was followed by a presentation by Eric Lind, director of the Audubon Society and Constitution Island Marsh sanctuary. Mr. Lind's presentation focused on the effects of the contamination in the marsh and the Foundry Cove and the superfund cleanup. The final phase of the project was the interpretive canoe trip through the marsh with Eric Lind and 2005 Haldane graduate Brian Rubino.
The students saw and heard first hand the history of the marsh, the almost catastrophic effects of the contamination, and the successful cleanup that followed. Many thanks to the staff from the Audubon Society and Constitution Island Marsh sanctuary and especially the Haldane School Foundation for their generosity in funding this extremely worthwhile project.
