Cold Spring's Recycling Program Expanded to Include More Materials Election practices and the Police Dept. to be the subject of a workshop on July 26 by Michelle Woods
The recycling program in Cold Spring Village has expanded to include a wider range of materials; Trustee Seth Gallagher noted, at the Village's Board of Trustees' Monthly Meeting on June 12, 2007. Residents could now recycle items such as cereal, pizza and cookie boxes, milk cartons, junk mail and magazines.
The Trustees unanimously agreed this was beneficial not only to the environment but it also potentially represented a fiscal saving; Mayor Anthony Phillips saying that: "it is cheaper to get rid of recycling than garbage." The Trustees were keen to point out that paper products for recycling should be secured, material inside taken out and, as Trustee Dunn pointed out, "all the paper products don't have to be separated."
Hoping that residents will take advantage of the expanded program by recycling a wider array of paper products, the Mayor said that the Village would "get a better feel after a month or so" of how people are using the service. Trustee Gallagher, who conducted research into different recycling programs, thanked the Mayor "for helping us expand the recycling program."
Trustee John Teagle noted that the Village will be providing three recycling bins: one by the river, one on Main Street; and one at Mayor's Park. In addition to allowing residents and visitors to recycle some of their garbage, the Trustees noted that it may also help to cut down on overfills in the public trash cans. In other environmental news, Trustee Gallagher said that the Mayor would be showing a representative from the New York Power Authority around municipal buildings on the June 27 to conduct an energy audit of the buildings which would result in "saving money and cutting down on energy use."
Mayor Phillips is to meet with the Village police officer-in-charge and with the Fire Chief or Inspector to discuss parking plans for summer events, following what the Mayor described as a parking "disaster" at the Cold Spring Antiques Fair on June 10. According to the Mayor, there was a large amount of congestion due to an unexpectedly high number of visitors at the Fair. The Mayor said that the congestion would have made it difficult for emergency vehicles to move around the Village if the need arose.
In his liaison report from the Chamber of Commerce Executive Board Meeting, Mr. Gallagher noted that the Summer Concert Music Series will start on Sunday, July 1 (with local band Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams) and will continue through the summer every Sunday with a different band until September 2, and that the Chamber's Annual Moonlight Cruise will take place on June 29th, departing at 7pm from the Cold Spring Boat Club. Trustee Ed Mancari asked for confirmation on the date for the Senior Citizen Picnic, which will take place on August 25.
In other news, in their monthly report to the Board of Trustees, the Cold Spring Comprehensive Plan Special Board said that they had "a return rate of approximately 20%" on their Comprehensive Plan surveys; they noted that their working groups "have been busy" and "work has begun" with public meetings being held at various locations in the Village. Times, dates and locations for these meetings will be posted in the Village Office.
Finally, Trustee Teagle asked for themed weekly workshops on specific issues and presented the Board with a list of suggestions; Trustee Gallagher noted that the Board of Trustees' weekly workshop on June 26 would focus on election practices and also the Village police. That meeting will start at 7:30pm
The Cold Spring Board Monthly Meeting takes place on the second Tuesday of every month. The next Monthly Meeting will be on July 10.
