Eleanor Roosevelt Center to Sponsor Girls and Women in Action Symposium

The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill announces its 2007 Girls and Women in Action Symposium on Friday, June 29 at the Wallace Education Center located at the FDR Home and Library in Hyde Park, NY. Girls and Women in Action Symposiums bring together educators, practitioners, scholars, students, and community members to develop best practices for leadership and citizenship development of girls and women. Symposium themes are drawn from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt's proudest achievement. This year's event is funded in part by the National Park Service.

The 2007 Symposium, "The Right to Work: Gender Equality in the Workplace", will focus on avenues for action in topic areas such as equality in education, equal pay, supportive employee benefits, and effective mentor relationships. The day will begin with a 9am keynote, Challenges and Opportunities to Creating Gender Equality in the Workplace, by Bobbie Birleffi, an EMMY- Award winning television producer and director. Her talk will be followed by a panel of women who will be discussing the challenges and triumphs of being working women. Breakout sessions on women's unique strengths in the workplace, negotiating terms of work, being an effective mentor, and balancing work and family will be held during lunch.

An afternoon panel will feature alumnae from the Center's Girls' Leadership Workshop discussing the support they have had in the pursuit of their careers and the support they would like to have. Participants will then engage in guided small group discussions designed to lead to action. An open house at the FDR Library and Visitor Center followed by a reception will occur from 5-7. Allida Black, director and editor of The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers at George Washington University, will wrap up the day with a talk, What Eleanor Roosevelt's Life and Legacy Teaches Us.

For a detailed program and registration form, contact The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill, info@ervk.org or phone 845-229-5302. Registration fees range from $15 for the reception and closing talk to $35 for all sessions. There are discounts for students and seniors and some scholarships are available.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill is a non-partisan, privately funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization created in 1977 as part of federal legislation designating Val-Kill as a national historic site; the only home of a former U.S. First Lady recognized in this way. The Eleanor Roosevelt Center works to achieve Eleanor Roosevelt's vision of a world where social justice prevails.
