American Red Cross has CPR/First Aid Classes
Emergencies from choking to bleeding to shock can occur at any time and anywhere. Thousands of New Yorkers have decided to be prepared to assist during emergencies by attending Red Cross first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes. These classes provide information about preventing injuries and sudden illnesses while also offering instruction on how to recognize emergencies and provide basic care until the arrival of advanced medical personnel. According to the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY), every person should learn the eight important life-saving skills:
* Recognize emergency situations * Check the scene and call for help * Perform CPR and care for adult breathing and cardiac emergencies * Safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a person suffering from sudden cardiac arrest * Avoid blood-borne pathogen exposure * Care for wounds, bone and soft tissue injuries, head and spinal injuries, burns, heat and cold emergencies * Manage sudden illnesses such as stroke, seizure, poisoning * Minimize shock
New procedures have been incorporated into the latest ARC/GNY CPR classes and new guidelines have been introduced to first aid classes that clearly indicate how responders with varying levels of emergency care training should proceed when treating victims. Hands-on practice sessions and real-life scenarios make learning exciting and first aid techniques easy to remember.
Classes include adult/child/ infant first aid and CPR with an automated external defibrillator (AED) component. Additional classes are offered for professional responders. Several classes are offered in Spanish. Standard first aid certification is for three years. CPR/ AED-adult certification is for one year.
Red Cross classes are offered frequently in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties on weekdays, evenings and weekends. Learn more by calling ARC/ GNY - Putnam/West Point at 845-938-4100, or reviewing the Red Cross course catalog at www.nyredcross.com .
